East Bound and Down

When pressure mounts in your life, we tend to resolve to use the same methods of trying to figure things out.  We are adamant when we tell ourselves, “I will not let that happen again” or “Never again” or some other rationalization that calms our own monkey mind.  When the proverbial button gets pushed-  that says we DEFINITELY will try harder- failure at times, is just around the corner.

Temazcal Tonantzin: Ceremony with the Virgen de Guadalupe

Almanac of the Soul

Virgen de Guadalupe, Albuquerque, New Mexico, December 2013

The universe sends us some very interesting messages.  Some are reminders of our past and others are reminders of what our future may bring.  I have been very lucky to have been born into a indigenous faith healing tradition that blends my Native American, Tejano and Mexican roots.  I recently have had the opportunity to examine up close and personal some of those distinct details, speaking with and learning several ‘blessings’ from an older Cubano in his 90s who long practiced Macumba in Cuba before arriving on a raft in Miami in 1971.  To that extent, I ended up visiting several Botanicas in Los Angeles, California walking away with some lessons learned on ‘old school’ ways of doing ceremony. The following week I was in Albuquerque, New Mexico attending a Barral Institute workshop on brain and spinal cord injuries.  Of course this Curandero also met up with a group of very adept traditional healers in Curanderismo and was able to participate in a Virgen de Guadalupe celebration held in a traditional Temezcal– the type of sweat lodge that has been used by the Aztecs, Mayans, Toltecs and those that came before.  What I learned was this:

Healer, heal thyself

A funny thing happened to me last week. I threw out my back.  For those of you who know me, it is almost laughable that this traditional medicine man of Mexican-Apache descent from South Texas, who is a martial arts expert,  has a sudden onset of back pain for no apparent reason.  Initially the pain “on a one to ten scale” was a 12. There was no heavy lifting involved.  There was no yard work or mixed martial arts cage fighting involved.  There were no other activities that involved my back that would lead me to conclude of one factor that precipitated a back injury.  All I could think of at first was “why me?” and “why now?”  As I start this road to recovery, it reminds me once again that I am only human.  Which is too bad…unfortunately.

The Path to Healing

Through the last several weeks I have been doing some soul searching about life and thinking of my own mortality.  The passing of Dr. Pert gave me time for some reflection- (albiet abrupt reflection) – however it was also a renewed vigor on what it means to live.  The past holds many gifts- some negative, some positive and some in between. While living in the moment is the thing to do, knowing when those singular moments of clarity is upon us is something else.  Why settle for silver when you can attain gold?

Wait..you are telling me this is possible?

The path to healing begins with you and your BaZi.  If you feel stuck, have decisions you need to make or really just want to generally Open the Door to Your Destiny, please read on.

The Molecules of Emotion: Candace Pert 1946-2013

Several weeks ago a light went out in the world of healing.  The scientific community lost one of its pioneers.  Women’s rights lost one of their true trailblazers for women in science and medicine.  The alternative medicine community lost one of its most powerful and respected voices.  I lost a friend, mentor, colleague and a patient.

Once in a great while we witness genius among us.  We often do not see this as it is happening, only when it has passed.  I was lucky enough to know Candace both professionally and personally.

My Karma Ran Over Your Dogma

When you look for any kind of resolution to a problem we attempt to do one of three things- (or for the creative ones in all of us, a combination of the following: [1] shoot it [2] eat it [3] attempt a 9 month to 15 year relationship of codependency with this particular person, thought pattern or situation.
